RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."
In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
